Self-check

Security program readiness checklist.

24 yes or no questions for a company of 50 to 500 people with no dedicated security team. Answer from memory. It takes about ten minutes.

Ownership and governance

Security work drifts when no one owns it.

Assets and access

You cannot protect what you cannot list.

Vendors and third parties

Your customers’ data also sits with your suppliers.

Policies and training

Written rules only help if people know them.

Incident readiness

The first hour of an incident is no time to decide who does what.

Audit and evidence

Customers increasingly ask you to prove it.

How to read your answers

Count the yes answers, then look at the no answers.

Tick a box for every yes. If you are not sure, leave it empty: not knowing is itself the finding.

  • Most answers yes

You have the basics. Pick the few no answers and give each an owner and a date.

  • A mix of yes and no

Common for a growing company. Start with ownership, access and incident readiness, which cost little and change the most.

  • Mostly no, or unsure

Not a failing grade. It means the program has not been built yet, and a short plan will show the order to build it in.

This is a self-check, not an audit. It does not test whether your controls work, it does not map to a framework, and a full score is not a certification or a guarantee. It only shows where to look first. For a scored view of your actual setup, see the free risk check, or read how a managed program covers these areas.
